What is a coverstitch machine?

A coverstitch sews two or three parallel rows on the top of the fabric with a looper underneath, making a flat, stretchy hem that covers the raw edge. It produces the clean parallel topstitching on T-shirt hems, cuffs, and activewear, and it flexes with knit fabric so the hem won't pop. It works alongside an overlock, not instead of it.

How to choose a coverstitch machine

First decide flatbed or cylinder bed. A flatbed coverstitch like the JACK W4 suits open hems and general topstitching; a cylinder-bed machine like the K5 wraps around tubular pieces — cuffs, sleeves, waistbands. Then choose needle count for the width of the cover, and decide on automation: thread trimmer and auto-footlifter speed up high-volume hemming, and the AI K7 line auto-adjusts to the material. If you run knits and activewear, you'll usually pair a coverstitch with an overlock, so consider buying both from the same family for shared parts and service.
