What is an overlock (serger)?

An overlock, or serger, wraps the raw edge of the fabric with three to six threads while a knife trims it, so the seam finishes clean and won't fray. It builds and edges knit and woven garments, and on stretch fabric its differential feed keeps the seam from waving. It's a core machine in any garment shop.

How to choose an overlock machine

Start with thread count: 3-thread for edge finishing and rolled hems, 4-thread for a seam plus an overedge, 5-thread for a safety stitch, and 6-thread for the heaviest work. Then look at feed and automation. Differential feed is essential for knits — it gathers or stretches the fabric so the seam stays flat. JACK's E4S series covers the core range with direct-drive motors, and the C7 AI line adds automatic material adjustment that re-sets the machine as the fabric changes. Match the thread count to your garments, and add auto-trim if your runs are long.
