What is a zig-zag machine?

A zig-zag machine sews a lockstitch that swings side to side instead of running straight, so it spans a seam edge, attaches elastic or lace, and makes seams that flex. It's used in lingerie, emblem and applique work, some footwear, and anywhere a seam needs to stretch without breaking.

How to choose a zig-zag machine

Decide whether you need a dedicated zig-zag or a machine that does both straight and zig-zag. The JACK 20U is a classic straight-and-zig-zag lockstitch with pattern selection; the JK-1530D adds automatic, programmable zig-zag patterns and direct drive. Look at the maximum zig-zag width for your widest seam, the available stitch patterns (2-step, 3-step zig-zag for elastic), and the feed type for your fabric.
