What is a lockstitch machine?

A lockstitch is the straight seam made by a single needle thread interlocking with a bobbin thread inside the fabric — identical on both sides and strong enough for almost any garment, denim, or leather work. A single-needle lockstitch machine is the most common machine on a production floor, and it's where most shops start.

How to choose a lockstitch machine

Choosing a lockstitch comes down to speed, feed, and automation. For light-to-medium garment work, a high-speed drop-feed machine like the JACK A5E-B (5,000 SPM, direct-drive servo, auto-trim, AI material sensing) covers most of it. For matched-ply topstitching where the layers can't shift, a needle-feed machine like the A6F holds the plies together. Double-needle models lay two parallel rows in one pass for strong, even topstitching. Decide how much automation you want as standard — automatic thread trimming and presser-foot lift save real time over a shift — and whether your heaviest seams need the extra torque of a walking foot instead.
